what is indian electronica? Print E-mail

Indian Electronica is a legally registered Canadian-based online community, record label, radio station and annual international music festival - all focused on showcasing cutting edge electronic music inspired by South Asian traditions.  Our office is located in downtown Toronto – at the Centre for Social Innovation in the historic Robertson Building.

Initially popularised in the mid 1990s with the UK's Asian Underground movement, the music of Indian Electronica is expressive of an increasingly complex global identity.  Indian Electronica music fuses 'East' and 'West' using technology and tradition to produce some of the World's most innovatively emotive and exciting sounds.

The music we publish and promote has truly become a global phenomenon.  Today there are more professional producers and performers around the world than ever before seeking to express Diasporic culture through music.  Audiences from all ethno-cultural backgrounds who can appreciate this music are growing exponentially and internationally - in number and diverse multi-cultural background.

interview with Qasim

To learn more about what we do, check out this video interview with Indian Electronica's Director, Qasim Virjee: (you might need to pause it and let the stream buffer for a few seconds before playing)

A note from the video/interview's Producer:

"Qasim Virjee founded Indian Electronica with a passion for music, and a vision to help establish a platform for innovative South-Asian influenced electronic music and artists. The website has been in existence for over 4 years now, and in just two short years, the Indian Electronica Festival has grown from two world cities to five world cities spanning 3 continents. Yet 10 years after Anokha, very little information is available about this music, with its unique blend of East & West, technology &tradition, and the artists who make it.

I produced this mini-feature to help inform those who are new to the music and want to know more. I also wanted to give people an up-close and personal glimpse into the world of Qasim Virjee, a man who is quickly becoming an important cultural catalyst for intelligent South-Asian influenced music and media the on the world stage."
