Tonight in Toronto

Sep 4 '09 - Written by Qasim

Once again the Indian Electronica Festival is hitting Toronto - *tonight* !

This year we've focused on DJs rather than bands and we have 4 artists spinning a wide selection of beats plus an AV performance that interprets the Harmonium - a beloved Indian instrument.

If you haven't got the details already, peep our event listing or RSVP on Facebook.

Y'know, I was really quite let down by the IE festival. I was probably there around 10 PM and my friends and I waited until 1 AM before giving up. There was music going on, but Remarkably Little of it had any South Asianey goodness -- nothing like I find on IE radio or on your 95% excellent CD that I had bought as a download. What's more, whenever a good dance groove was going, and people were starting to dance, the DJs would switch to something ethereal / mellow / abstract without even a full "tune" going by, and everyone who had been on the dance floor would sorta shuffle about for a few moments and then kinda wander off. It felt as if all of the DJs in that time period weren't paying attention to the vibe of the room at all, just working inside their own heads or something. I dunno if it got better after we left. For everyone else's sake, I hope so. But I'd been looking forward to that night for weeks and had convinced others to join me, but none of us had a particularly good time except chatting to each other. We could have done that at a restaurant or any old bar. Sorry for the negativity, but I just wanted to let you know my impressions. The FB comments I saw beforehand suggested that I was far from the only one looking forward to a night of excellent dance music. I hope next time will be more IE-ish.
