Kush Arora interview on Imaginasian Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 March 2008

I haven't watched this yet, but wanted to give everyone a heads-up that Kush Arora's been interviewed by Imaginasian.tv and the clip's online.

Kush is a pretty groovy dubstep producer based in San Fran whom I recently got some words from for an interview on the dubstep scene - which will be online next week and in the next issue of the IE newsletter.

Remix Sasha.. for $4?! Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 January 2008

I just saw mention on Beatport that world-famous producer and dj Sasha is offering up parts for a new track to be remixed by anyone and everyone to be possibly included in a release from emFire.

The winner also gets themselves a copy of Ableton 7 to help their remix career go even further and gets an interview on Beatportal itself.

The only weird thing about this whole announcement is that you can only download 2 parts of the song for free.  That's right - the whole thing is somewhat of a scam as the 'full package' of parts for the song - 13 in total, will cost you $3.99?!  WTF?

Look out for Indian Electronica Records Remixed project soon guys and gals - we'll be offering up parts for equally cool remixes that won't set you back a dime.. more on that in February.

Bobby Friction explores British South Asian identity... Print E-mail
Friday, 12 October 2007

...in a great documentary called 'Generation 7/7' which is now in our video vault - check it out!

The doc's pretty interesting; BBC Radio 1 and Asian Network dj/presenter Bobby Friction jumps in a van and heads out to the town where 4 supposed terrorists grew up and in trying to answer questions about why they might've done what the media purports (i.e. organize bombings around London on 7 July 2005).  In the process of trying to get answers he realizes that perhaps the larger issue lies in how the media industry relates to both the communities it exposes through reporting as well as its audience.

Hoolahooping to Talvin Print E-mail

Just came across this vid, thought y'all might find it interesting.  The track, btw, is Talvin Singh's remix (I think) of Najma Akhtar's Goom Charakhana ;)

DJ Rekha on CNN Print E-mail
Monday, 19 February 2007

Incase you missed this one, I just saw a short interview grabbed from CNN and bunged onto youtube that's worth watching - its with DJ Rekha of Basement Bhangra fame.  Rekha holds down the oldest and longest running Bhangra jam in Manhattan and works with a one Mr Sharmaji - who you might've heard of via the BBC Asian Network (some new tracks of his have been getting spins on Friction recently)

If you're in NYC sometime soon, I recommend checking out Rekha's gigs - you can see some photos of a past Basement Bhangra in our gallery

Et voila:

Happy Birthday Ninjatune! Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 February 2007

front.25620 years ago Matt Black and Jon More founded what is still today my favourite record label on the planet - Ninjatune.

In that time, they've released 6 full-length titles under the Coldcut moniker and promoted a healthy alternative dance/electronic music culture internationally by tirelessly gigging and working with a slew of amazing independent artists for goals higher that simply getting rich, unlike many other musicians and producers iin the music industry.

Coldcut have also released DJ and VJ software in the past that push the fold with sample-based performance and encouraged new media musicians to engage with audiences using multimedia technology.

To celebrate their birthday, one track a month will be released for public consumption/remix purposes from their newest release - Sound Mirrors.  So, all you budding producers and knob twisters out there - go grab some samples and have fun!

bobby friction's USA tour... Print E-mail
Thursday, 08 February 2007

BBC Radio1 and Asian Network DJ Bobby Friction just got back from a mini-tour in NYC, San Fran and LA - he came back with some interesting conclusions about the States and an earth-rattling posit that may affect the state of world desi culture :)

Check this:

"1. New York is Desi music central in the US
2. San Francisco is the most amazing and beautiful city in the US
3. LA is just on another level as are its Desi’s
4. Too much Leftfield and Hip Hop artists in the US Desi scene – where’s the Pop culture?
5. The (US Desi’s) don’t know just how much talent they have
6. We (UK Desi’s) should be afraid, very afraid!!!

So my prediction is five years from now there will be an epic musical battle between the US and the UK, and Desi music will be the winner."

shiva soundsystem gets a facelift Print E-mail
Friday, 26 January 2007

picture_1The Shiva Soundsystem have just re-designed their website and its pretty groovy:

You can still load up their stand-alone blog  but pretty much everything else is now integrated into a tight new grey package - the site's new features include an MP3 player and online shopping system so you can check out the latest shiva tracks and then buy them right there if available.

If you've never heard of these guys - they're a collective based in London who include co-founder Nerm; the same chap that hosts a show called Electro East on the BBC Asian Network.

special Friction show on the Asian Network tonight Print E-mail
Tuesday, 19 December 2006

an_pathaan_420x300As a special treat for all y'all fans of global electronic music out there: I just got word that Pathaan will be taking over Bobby Friction's 'Friction' show on the BBC Asian Network tonight.

Not too sure what he'll be busting out, cuts wise, as Bobby normally keeps things eclectic and uptempo - should be interesting to hear big P's take on the show - I'm figuring a souped-up engine's been outfitted to the Rickshaw for the show ;)

Its actually on in just a couple of hours - 10PM GMT, so get ready to get busy!  Oh, and they stream on demand for a weekso you can catch it again or later for the first time. Tune in:

got sikh? Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 December 2006

sikhshirtFor all those of you out there proud to be sikh, or know a sikh, or think the khanda symbol of skihism is wicked...

...You can now get your Sikh on by busting out a cool t-shirt, coffee mug (would look pretty cool in your cubicle, innit?), hat etc via Cafe Press!

It seems this whole enterprise is the work of Ashmith - a dude on myspace.

Yam Bloggery Print E-mail
Monday, 11 September 2006

yamIf you swing by Indianelectronica.com often you'll know that I think one of the most interesting brown cats making beats in the UK at the moment is a chap going by the name Yam Boy.

He's a joker with social conciousness that is a teacher by day and wordsmith by night, who also DJs in weird places like Brixton's Ritzy Cinema - yes, just down the street from where those rastas always offer 'Skunk Weed... Skunk Weed..' next to the bus stops...

Case in point that email signatures are almost redundant these days, I just noticed recently that Yamji has a blog!  He's just head to India on a music project with d'archetypes co-member Shane Solanki (sp?) and I hope he drops word on all the madness they get up to.

Check it out: http://yamboy1.blogspot.com/

watch-out: nerm’s planning to steal the airwaves… Print E-mail
Thursday, 25 May 2006

No, not "airwaves" the chewing gum - Nerm from the Shiva Soundsystem is gonna rock the FM dial this monday!  Here’s what he wrote to his mailing list today:

Presented by Nerm, it features a wide range of music from Karsh Kale to Ian Brown, from Rock ID to rare Talvin Singh not to mention a few surprises.

There are also exclusive tracks and interviews with upcoming British Rock band Temple, guitar ledged Aziz Ibrahim and Drum & Bass don D-Code (including the first play of Shiva Soundsystem’s Tubla Ethics and Mumbai Cells - VIP Lockdown Mix)

You can check the show out on BBC Radio One this monday, that's Monday 29th May 1am - 3am GMT - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/oneworld/

Also, if you dig it, or dig him, or dig it and him (ahem), hop on over to http://shivauk.com/ and  get yourself hooked up with their fantastic series of podcasts - Nerm was telling me some time back that they're 'limited edition' and I think they'll probably take em down when the fix themed shows are all up but then again, that from the blokes who haven't uploaded new party pics since October 2005 ;)   Nonetheless, rock your ipod to this shit while its hot.

London rapper M.I.A. has been denied a visa to visit or work in the USA by immigration officials, AIM magazine has learnt. Sources close to the British Sri-Lankan MC said that her lawyers are frantically trying to resolve the situation. No one from her record company had returned messages to comment at the time of publication.

But she has confirmed the situation on her Myspace website with a blog entry posted on 7th April titled: 'They Try Shut My Door!'.

oh la la mr bops… Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 April 2006

British nutter, hooligan and music producer/percussionist Mr Bops seems to be developing his website a litte bit these days (last I checked there was a pic of a skeleton and a tameta and well, that’s about it). Some, ahem, ‘large developments’ (wink wink nudge nudge)… well, enough cutting to the chase:

Go visit mr bops’ website and download a raunchy wallpaper for your desktop of a fake whisky and hot bindiya okay?
