Amika Kushwaha is one of the finest harmonium players in Canada. She has a superb talent of being able to decipher tonal and semi-tonal nuances of any vocalist she performs with. She has the ability to adapt her fingering to any musical style ranging from Indian classical to Indian folk music. Amika’s specialty is her intuition to create on-the-spot improvisations that compliment any performance.
Apart from her skills as a harmonium player, Amika has been dancing for 20 years and has become known as a specialist in the technically difficult Kathak Dance (one of the classical dance forms of India). Her formal dance training has included studies in India at the Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi, India.
Kathak dance incorporates highly technical mathematical compositions coupled with grace, speed and flexibility. Amika’s advanced knowledge of Kathak makes her a well-synchronized harmonium player with the ability to create complex musical patterns. Her masterful understanding of vocal music and her flawless sense of timing make her one of the few harmonium players who can play Lehra (a complex time keeping melody) for Tabla soloists.
As well as holding her own dance concert series, Amika Kushwaha is also a sought after dance instructor in Edmonton, AB, and holds a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering.
