overview

Shaair+FuncOn September 20th we held the first ever Indian Electronica Festival in New York and I'm so happy to say that it was a smashing success!

This was our third installment of the 2007 Festival series and I worked with our Advisory Committee to program the event uniquely compared to the previous summer sessions in Toronto and London – NYC was all about the Djs... well, we also had a couple of live acts but the plan entailed creating a comfortable social atmosphere where people could chill out, shake their rumps, chat or whatever else they felt like...

Shamik: human beatboxThe performance roster was fantastic – a Festival first saw some old school hip hop vibe courtesy of human beat-boxer Shamik – all the way from Calgary Alberta, his poly-rhythmic stylings had the audience captivated; with beats ranging from boom-bap to '94 junglis'!  We also had Shaair+Func do a live set (which was electrifying, despite the venue not having a live set-up – which meant us plugging things into areas of the house mixer which may be considered profane ;) ) - this is a great duo that play an eclectic range of styles encompassing trip-hop, breaks, rock and more; further exhibiting their talents, under the name 'Fun'international,' one half of the group took to the decks after myself around 10 o'clock to spin a great selection of dubstep from around the world.

Of course, none other than the percussive impresario many New Yorkers love – Sharmaji, stepped up to the decks following Func'international to drop tracks from his magic bag of delicious indo-flavoured raggafantastic dubstep treats; which were so tasty I *had* to ask him to spin up a signature mix for Indian Electronica's 10th podcast show (download it – the set's sick).

Qasim & Spooky apres showFlipping the script, DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid jumped into the booth apres Sharmaji with an array of music cut up wildstyle – featuring bhangra dhols, bollywood classics, hip hop crowd-rockers, Jamaican dance-hallf fog-horn laden cuts and all sorts of other beats – 'twas nice nice.  Of course, I couldn't help jumping in the booth and jamming away at some live visuals – remixing Spooky's prepared display of multinational flags on the spot with my own collection of WWII footage, fireworks, bharatnatyam dancers etc... Sexy stuff.

Thanks again goes to v:shal kanwar – who drove down from DC to end the gig with a mellow set; it was nice to see him play this time; unfortunately in Toronto we had too many acts on stage and v:shal didn't get the chance to spin.

To top off this wonderful Big Apple experience, the night after IE07:NYC, Tito G and I were at the Rubin Museum of Art's K2 lounge to host a listening party for Indian Electronica vol 001- IE's new 2 disc compilation release.  It was a lovely evening of mingling with open ears – congrats to all who won a copy in the raffle, for everyone else please pop over to http://www.indi...ronica.com/records and pick up a copy from our online store ;)

To everyone involved including the Advisory Committee, the Rubin, White Rabbit and all who came, wished they could, helped spread the word far and wide etc... I thank you for all the positivity; hopefully this is the beginning of a long love affair between IE and NYC :)

After hosting installments of the Festival in Toronto and London England already this summer, we'll be in the Big Apple with some killer beats from around the world provided for by DJs as well as live acts.

Musically, the programming for this event reflects NYC's American cosmopolitanism; expect an indo-flavoured mashup of hip-hop inspired beats and breaks - with human beatboxing courtesy of Calgary Canada's Shamik,  an electro-acoustic live set by the indo-American dua Shaair+Func, a unique dj set by NYC resident DJ Spooky and many more wicked performances, including a special live visual/vj performance by IE's own Abdul Smooth!!

Abdul Smooth / visuals + dj set

Having grown up between East Africa and Canada, Qasim Virjee (aka Abdul Smooth), brings a refreshing afro-cosmopolitan outlook on life to the mix.  His music journalism and performances have crossed international boundaries in person and through indianelectronica.com – a community web-zine he founded in 2003 to provide platform and forum for the artistic talents of South Asians worldwide.

As an artist, Qasim's endeavors extend beyond music and into a dynamic realm merging photography, videography, graphic design, and digital communities with multi-cultural aural tapestry.

Inspired by the works of diverse thinkers such as historian-of-religion Mircea Eliade and Wagner (composer), Abdul Smooth's sound is pan continental but engrossingly subjective; incorporating electronic music with a myriad of the world's sounds – from street noises to tribal chants to religious hymns.

Nawtiks / dj set + live electronics

Nawtiks is a Toronto, Canada based duo who combines the North and South Indian sounds with that of the hard punchy beats and basslines from the West. Their creative endeavors voice their stance on the many issues facing today's world - for music without meaning is simply noise

Nawtiks have been fusing the Sultry East with the Progressive West to combine their signature sound for the last 13 years. Nik Mutta and Randy Kahlon have a sound and style that's uniquely their own whether it's uptempo drumnbass and jungle or the slow traditional sitar lines, that they carve out or play with instruments.

more about Nawtiks...

Like their ancestoral birthplace of the five rivers, each half of this duet approaches their music from a different stream.  Nik from the predestined pursuit of spiritual enlightment and Randy from the physical cutting edge of the world. Each of their streams as with water flows together for musical continuity.

Of the five rivers, only two remain flowing carving their mark into the very soul of the Earth. Just as this duet remains breathing life into music in the lands around them.

Shaair + Func / live + dj set

Music with an intention and root in building a bridge across genres, stereo-types, countries, governments, race, and gender while praising and acknowledging the highest power of all, Love, is the foundation of this duo.  Shaa'ir, hailing from a New York City Broadway Stage background, born to immigrant parents from Jammu/Kashmir in the United States, has been around the block in the performance and artist's circuitry, and came to India to flesh out an understanding of her Indian roots.  What happened instead was mass-synergy.  The western influenced culture of Mumbai, the strong appreciation for soul and rock music, brought her to popular rock icon funcinternational's door step, the well-known producer and guitarist for the Indian rock band, Pentagram.  Together they make, Shaa'ir and Func; Poetry “func’d” up to praise love and oneness in the universe and all of its inhabitants.

more about Shaair+Func...
After celebrating the official release of their first album, “New Day: The Love Album” in India under the popular label Counter Culture, Shaa’ir + func have convinced the media of their international appeal.  Since then, they have conquered NYC and are now in London to promote their record and “spread some love”, as they say.  Their past performances include the official Mumbai Fashion Week 2006 afterparty, the MetroADLAB red carpet launch, The Big Chill Goa festival alongside such notables as Sheila Chandra, The Bays, Cold Cut, and Mad Professor, along with many other packed shows in the major metropolitan cities of India.  Their sound genre bends.  Their shows most often include a forward-thinking, hip audience, dancing the night away singing along to the powerful lyrics existing within their unique performances.  Zany production, spoken word, dance, wicked guitar playing, and memorable costume decisions make this duo fresh and exciting.  Together, Shaa'ir and Func make a kind of music that moves, transcends, captivates, and sure as hell makes you want to get up and dance, get out and change the world, stay in and fall in love...and, always, always thrive.

“These guys have all the potential in the world to make it big internationally.  The breath-taking details, and the tight well etched out melodies they dished in their live performance was enough to turn the first-timers who had generally ‘dropped in’ to listen into their lifelong fans.”

-Shridevi Keshavan, DNA

Shamik / live human beatbox

"I hear music in my head, and use the artform of beatboxing to bring it to life. I love seeing people's reactions when my basslines, synth melodies, or drum sounds make them move to the dance floor. I record music to give people something to listen to when they get home after a show. We live in a "seeing is believing" world, so first I grab the attention of my audience at a show. Then I keep their attention through my produced songs. My passions lie in spreading music, perform anywhere that I can, and to keep meeting other musicians."

Sharmaji / dj set

ROLLING LIKE A TEN-TON JUGGERNAUT OF DESI BASS NASTINESS, (see? much more fun) Sharmaji creates a bass-heavy, post-desi sound that is as consistently powerful as it is diverse in background-- and completely NYC. His productions have been spun all through the states and UK by DJ's like Bobby Friction and Nihal, Shiva Soundsystem, the Avaaz/G.O.O.N.D.A. crews, DJ Rekha, Cheb-i Sabbah, DhamaalSF, and countelss others. As a DJ and percussionist he's brought his riddims to artists as diverse as Karsh Kale, Ming & FS, Tina Sugandh, JUNGLI, and Timbaland's hookstress RajeSwari, as well as for NYC's 9-years-strong Basment Bhangra party and hometown bhangra sensation Bikram Singh.

more about Sharmaji

In 2004 he started a long-term relationship with AR Rahman's Broadway musical "Bombay Dreams" (all hugs, no kissing) logging around 300 performances of it in that year alone, on up through to the 2006 national tour.

2005 witnessed a divine tour in Brazil with DJ Rekha (and, with good fortune, dubstep warrior Kode9), Toronto with DK and State of Bengal, Madison Square Garden w/ reggaeton greats Wisin y Yandel and Don Omar, Afrogrime with Guillermo Brown and the MH soundsystem, Boston and Miami in 24 hours with Jungli, Collaborations with the superlative Sunny Jain Collective and Kaash, and headlining DJ sets at DirectDrive, Avaaz, and Tablatronic.

Besides spending more time Asia than at home in Brooklyn, 2006 was centered around the 1st national tour of Bombay Dreams in the USA. After drinking all the beer in Pittsburgh, other highlights included a live set with Cheb-i Sabbah at Summerstage in NYC, the massive Turntablas on the Bayou party in Houston w/ Deep Singh and the Mahabeats crew, a deconstructed tabla/dubstep DJ set in St. Louis, rocking Dubstep at the venerable Kollektiv party, and a recording session for J.lo 6 hours before heading out to Sri Lanka.

2007 kicked off with an onslaught of new Sharmaji sounds...the Bomb-zilian remix of Jay Dabhi's instant classic "Mumbai after Dark," the soon-to-be released ragga jungle refix of the G.O.O.N.D.A crew's "Tokin Raggastani..."

But the surprise hit, though, has been the tri-continental dubstep tune "Koli Stance" done in conjunction w/ SubSwara don Dhruva... mentioned in Pitchfork as "best in its genre," it's already made its way into sets by the likes of Maryanne Hobbes and Kid Kameleon. Much, much, much more to come...
