The Orb - The Dream
I'm always surprised by how few artists these days have fun with their music. Thats not to say that today's music is not fun to listen to but I was just so pleased to hear this latest offering from The Orb because I know Alex Paterson, Youth, Tim Bran and their collaborators must have really enjoyed putting it together.
Anyone familiar with The Orb knows that their sound is a deliciously layered melange of influences; something I like to call Life Music; the stuff you can listen to any time... Its music that is especially enjoyable when you've got time to yourself to make tea, try on silly outfits and dance around your living room eating licorice... [perhaps not exactly those activities, in that combination, but I think you get my drift :) ]
The Dream is a timeless album you'll never tire of. Offering inspiration for an endless imaginative journeys, this album epitomizes The Orb's characteristically warm-fuzzy vibe - using a heavily textured aesthetic employing spoken and sung vocal samples, eclectic instruments, synths and effects.
Though I strongly feel that the whole album is perfect, my personal favorites include:
- 'A Beautiful Day' - A wonderful piece using vocal chorus separated by wafty bass, guitar and ambiance,
- 'Lost & Found' - Pure dub,
- 'Sleeping Tiger & The Gods Unknown' - epically lush and ethereal, this 1:09m composition features no percussion and offers enough depth to leave you with a feeling of lasting nostalgia, leading perfectly into 'Codes,' the next track.
